Sleeping well has a direct impact on our physical and mental health and of course on how we get up and spend the day. So a good rest is essential and here the mattress on which we sleep has a huge impact.
Although it may seem incredible, we usually postpone the purchase of a new mattress beyond 10 years, a time limit recommended by the experts.
According to a study carried out by ASOCAMA, the Spanish bed association, 32% of Spaniards wake up without energy or muscle pain, a fact linked to the mattress´s quality and condition.
At Mugals we are experts in rest and sleep, not only mattresses but also base bed and pillows. We know that not all of us need the same type of mattress, so today we want to explain the differences between the varieties of mattresses and how you can choose the one that best suits you and your needs.
Features of a good mattress
Choosing a good mattress is a subjective decision since there is no perfect material or the right features for everyone. It is a personal purchase and it must be adapted to the needs and characteristics of each one, but there are two fundamental factors to take into account when you decide to buy a mattress.
Temperature
The temperature is linked to the breathability of the mattress. The more breathability, the greater the feeling of freshness. So you must take into account the place where you live, as well as your body temperature when choosing the material.
If you are cold or live in a place with low temperatures, spume, memory foam or latex mattresses store heat better than sprung ones. These are perfect if you live in a place where it is hot or if you are a hot person.
Currently, there are mattresses adapted to changes in the weather. They have different materials depending on the face of the mattress that is used.
Firmness
We speak of firmness when we talk about the resistance of the mattress to the weight of your body. Here it is important to take into account several factors.
- If you sleep alone or with someone. If you don´t sleep alone or you are one of those who move a lot, choose a mattress that absorbs movement well and does not sink so that there is no discomfort with changes in posture.
- Weight and height. If you are a light person, it is best to choose a flexible mattress that adapts to the shape of your body and distributes the weight well. If otherwise, you are strong or robust, the ideal option is a firm mattress to prevent it from sinking in the central part.
Regarding height, always choose a mattress at least 10 cm higher than your height. If you share a bed, the tallest person is the one who has to serve as a reference.
Mattress types
In addition to the factors that we have mentioned above, the type of mattress and the materials are essential to finding the most suitable. Currently, some mattresses mix different materials and fabrics to expand the offer and adapt to the needs of each person, especially when it comes to double mattresses since we find people of different complexions and characteristics sharing the same bed.
But in general, there are four main types of mattresses:
Sprung mattress
It is the most popular mattress because it is also the one we have known all our lives. This is not to say that buying a sprung mattress is old or uncomfortable. Technology and new materials have created sprung mattresses just as comfortable as latex or memory foam mattresses.
The main characteristic of sprung mattresses is that they are very firm and breathe very well, which is why they are highly recommended in places where it is hot.
There are three types of sprung mattresses:
- Bonel. They are the classic docks, they are independent docks. They are firm mattresses and quite affordable in price.
- Pocket or cylindrical sprung. The sprungs are housed in separate sheaths. They are very comfortable mattresses especially in double beds since they absorb movement very well and avoid being noticed when the other person moves. They are products with high durability.
- Continuous thread sprung. These mattresses reinforce the lower back, so they are somewhat rigid and do not adapt too much to the natural curvature of the body. They are ideal for people who need an extra boost.
Latex mattress
These are mattresses with a great capacity for recovery, they return to their original state easily. They have high elasticity and fabric that allows the particles to flow easily, making them ideal for allergy sufferers.
Also, if you sleep with a person who moves a lot or if you do it yourself, their ability to recover will make you not notice the movement. They are very comfortable mattresses that keep the heat.
There are three types of latex: natural, synthetic or a mixture of both and the price varies depending on the material chosen.
Latex is usually used to complement mattresses made with other materials, it is important that the latex layer is at least 4cm, otherwise, the properties provided by this material will not be noticed.
Memory foam mattresses
This mattress adopts the same shape as the body when you lie on it. It is advisable to reduce the pressure of the areas of the body with greater weight.
Recommended in double beds or for people with muscle or bone pain. Although if you live in a place where it is very hot it is better to opt for a perforated memory foam mattress since it increases breathability.
Foam mattress
They are the most basic mattresses and therefore the cheapest. They weigh very little and are easy to transport. They are ideal to use sporadically, for guest beds, sofa beds or children that weigh little.
They are not recommended for allergy sufferers as they do not perspire well.
Tips for buying a mattress
